Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi)
Very similar in appearance to the Neon Tetra, but a little larger. The other difference in appearance is that it has red all along its body whereas the neon only has a flash of red on its back half. As with almost all tetras, they prefer to live in fairly large groups. They live wild in the slow-moving black water tributaries in South America, in dense rain forest in Brazil and Venezuela. In a home aquarium they will prefer a well planted tank with lots of hiding places, and dark backgrounds and substrates will show off their vivid colours. They are not keen on harsh lighting, and their colours may appear faded under light that is too bright. Water conditions need to be soft and acidic. It will not thrive in poor water conditions, so make sure your tank is well maintained and clean. They will generally eat all kinds of live, fresh, and good quality flake foods.
